On the Issues

Tom Myers is an independent leader, not a career politician, who will roll up his sleeves and work with you to change the way Washington, D.C. does business. Protecting our future by delivering real, sustainable change for our families, our communities and our nation will be his priority every day on Capitol Hill.

Bringing our troops home safely from Iraq, keeping our nation secure

Tom believes our military, when strategically deployed, is a critical force for peace and prosperity. But the fact is, the war in Iraq has weakened our nation’s security at home and our standing abroad. Tom strongly supports a defined end to our military’s commitment in Iraq, and he will fight to redeploy our troops to other regions in the world where terrorists pose a true and immediate threat to our nation’s security.

Tom knows and is grateful for the sacrifices our men and women in uniform make for this country to provide the very foundations of our freedom. He is committed to protecting the men and women who bravely serve our country, and believes that we must honor the promises we have made to our veterans.

Tom will fight to bring home Western Pennsylvania’s fair share of vital homeland security funding, ensuring our first responders are adequately equipped to protect our communities. He will advocate tirelessly for policies, funding and enforcement to make sure that we act responsibly as citizens, as a nation, and as members of the global community.

Strengthening our local economy, creating more, good paying jobs

Tom will fight to fix unfair trade deals and level the playing field so that America can continue to compete in the global economy. He will pursue a balanced budget policy to counter the Bush Administration’s irresponsible fiscal agenda, and agenda that has resulted in record budget and trade deficits bankrupting our children’s future. And Tom supports common sense tax cuts for working families and for small businesses to spur job growth.

Tom will fight for an environmentally sound energy policy that reduces our dependence on foreign oil and profiteering oil companies, while making Pennsylvania a leader in alternative fuels energy sources such as clean burning coal, wind and ethanol. He’ll work to create market demand for alternative energy by increasing tax credits for businesses that develop alternative fuel sources, and in turn, create new, good paying jobs here in our district.

Expanding access to affordable health care

Tom believes health care is a right, not a privilege, and that all Americans deserve the same high quality and affordable health care that members of Congress receive. But the Bush Administration’s misplaced priorities have resulted in millions being added to the list of uninsured and an increased health care costs for countless others. Tom will fight to make health care affordable for all, increase preventative care, and establish performance standards for health providers.

Tom strongly believes that reforming the Medicare prescription drug benefit plan is critical, and he will stand up to big drug companies and hold insurance companies accountable for their actions. And Tom will fight to protect Social Security for our working families and seniors, and oppose risky privatization plans.

Ensuring our children receive the best education possible

The Bush Administration has consistently and unapologetically under-funded our nation’s educational needs. Tom will work for affordable education from pre-K to college, academic accountability, and a fully-funded No Child Left Behind initiative. He will fight for a substantial, higher education tax credit to help families afford to send their children to college.
