Lt. Governor Catherine Baker Knoll endorses Tom Myers

TomMyersandLt.Gov.CatherineBakerKnoll2 In front of an enthusiastic group of friends and supporters on November 14th, the Myers For Congress campaign read the following statement:

As we approach the challenges that our country, our state and our local communities face, especially when it comes to education, the safety and security of our country and the next generation, the health and well being of our senior citizens, and improving economic development in our neighborhoods, Tom Myers has the strength, values and experience to make a difference.

Tom Myers is the right candidate at the right time. He has proven his dedication to and passion for serving his fellow Pennsylvanians through his church and his extensive community service...and he has made a difference. Through his law practice, he has fought for the rights of people who couldn't fight for themselves...and won. And he is ready to take those skills and his passion for public service to Washington DC to fight for and represent the people in Pennsylvania's 3rd Congressional District.

I am proud to support Tom Myers in Pennsylvania's 3rd Congressional District.

~ Lt. Governor Catherine Baker Knoll

“I am so honored to have the friendship and support of Lt. Governor Catherine Baker Knoll,” Myers said, “and I am delighted that she has joined the campaign as an Honorary Chair. The Lt. Governor has taken a leading role, both in Pennsylvania and nationally, on issues important to her constituents and her wealth of experience and her dedication to the people in Pennsylvania is inspirational. And her confidence in me and my campaign for Congress tells me that we are definitely moving in the right direction. I am grateful for her friendship and I look forward to working with her to improve the lives of Western Pennsylvanians on the state and federal levels.”

Myers for Congress Opens Erie Headquarters

ERIE, PA – Joined by supporters from across the district, Democratic congressional candidate Tom Myers held the official grand opening of his campaign headquarters today, located at 2565 W. 8th Street in Erie.  Myers, a local attorney and current Board Chair of the YMCA of Greater Erie, is running for a chance to unseat incumbent Republican Phil English in Pennsylvania’s 3rd Congressional District.

“I can tell by the energy here today and the enthusiasm for our campaign from voters across this district that Phil English’s time in Congress is up,” Myers told supporters.  “English has aligned himself with George Bush at almost every turn, and under his watch, families have lost their jobs, their health care, and their retirement.  It’s clear we are ready for change.”

Though the headquarters is in Erie, Myers campaign efforts have blanketed the seven counties that comprise the third district.  “We’ve been on the road talking to every voter possible, and time and again, we hear about their desire for change; for new leadership that puts the needs of families first,” said Myers.

Pennsylvania’s Third Congressional District is located in the northwest corner of the state and includes all of Erie County, most of Mercer, Crawford and Butler Counties and about half of Venango, Warren and Armstrong Counties.

NEW REPORT:  TOM MYERS LEADS DEMOCRATIC CONGRESSIONAL CANDIDATES IN FUNDRAISING

With $107, 455.60 raised to date and $86,648.73 cash on hand, reports available this week from the Federal Election Commission [www.fec.gov ] reveal that Tom Myers, the Chairman of the Board of the YMCA of Greater Erie, has raised more than his opponents in his bid to replace Congressman Phil English next November. Myers’ fundraising totals are almost twice as high as his closest competitor, and his unspent cash exceeds both of his democratic primary opponents by a nearly 2:1 [Waltner] and more than a 3:1 [Foust] margin.

“I have been honored to meet so many good, hard-working folks throughout our district over the last several months,” Myers said, “and I share their deep concerns that our country is headed in the wrong direction at home and abroad. The people of Western Pennsylvania are hungry for new leadership in Washington, and they know that it’s going to take a Democratic candidate who can build a strong enough campaign to go toe-to-toe with Phil English.”

In the 2006 election cycle, the republican incumbent in Pennsylvania’s 3rd CD outspent his opponent 21:1 and garnered only 53.6% of the vote. According to the non-partisan Congressional Quarterly, English voted with President Bush 97-percent of the time in 2006.

Pennsylvania’s 3rd Congressional District includes all or part of the following counties: Erie, Crawford, Mercer, Butler, Armstrong, Venango and Warren.

Myers concluded, “I am grateful for the positive response and the support I continue to receive. Western Pennsylvanians connect with our message of hope and change, of getting us out of Iraq, preserving and creating family-sustaining jobs and making health care affordable. These resources will allow my campaign to continue this important dialogue as we head into the 4th quarter with great enthusiasm.”

Born and raised in Erie County, Myers, 47, currently resides in Millcreek with his wife of 12 years and their two daughters. An Erie attorney for over 20 years, Myers has worked extensively with strong community-minded organizations such as the YMCA of Greater Erie, the American Lung Association Northwestern PA, the Erie County Federation of Clubs and his church, the First Presbyterian Church of the Covenant. Myers also has a strong family labor background and represents a number of local labor organizations such as the IBEW Local 56, United Roofers Local 210 and the Great Lakes Building and Construction Trades Council.

DEMOCRAT TOM MYERS ANNOUNCES RUN FOR CONGRESS AGAINST PHIL ENGLISH

Erie, PA – Democrat Tom Myers, local attorney and the current Board Chair of the YMCA of Greater Erie, announced today that he has officially filed to run for the U.S. Congress in Pennsylvania's Third Congressional District against Republican incumbent Phil English. Myers released the following statement regarding his announcement:

Phil English is part of the problem in Washington, not part of the solution. He has repeatedly voted in support of George Bush's war in Iraq and he's supported unfair trade deals like NAFTA that have cost thousands of Pennsylvanians their jobs. The Democrats in our area are eager for a strong candidate with the ability to go toe-to-toe with Phil English. The families in our community deserve someone who's not a career politician who will fight for their interests.

If we want to change Washington, we need to change who represents us. I'll pursue a new course to help Northwestern Pennsylvania. We must responsibly bring our troops home from Iraq and refocus our priorities and resources on new priorities reducing our federal deficit, making health care universally accessible and ending unfair trade deals that have stripped our communities and hardworking families of good-paying jobs. We must leave a healthy legacy for our children and grandchildren, not mortgage their futures. If we work together, the best it is yet to come for America and Northwestern Pennsylvania.

Myers is part owner of the Erie law firm of Nichols & Myers, P.C and has 20 years of broad legal experience representing individuals, families and organizations. He has used his legal skills to aid various Erie County non-profits:

  • He is the current Board Chair and Chief Volunteer Officer for the YMCA of Greater Erie and has served on the YMCA's Board of Directors for 10 years.
  • For 15 years, he was the solicitor for the Erie County Federation of Fraternal & Social Organizations which boasts more than three dozen member social clubs in Erie County.
  • For nine years, he was the solicitor for the American Lung Association of Northwestern Pennsylvania which became known as the American Respiratory Alliance.
  • For over 14 years, he has represented the Kuhl Hose Volunteer Fire Department.
  • For the last three years, he has served as a Mental Health Review Officer for the Erie County Department of Human Services.

Jim Martin, Erie Regional President for Northwest Savings Bank, knows Myers from serving together for the last seven years on the Erie YMCA Board. Says Martin, "Tom's integrity, work ethic and passion for the youth and families of our communities is contagious. As board chair, he truly befits the YMCA's mission statement to build strong kids, strong families and strong communities."
